ATM Withdrawal Limits: What You Should Know

Your debit card has a daily cash-withdrawal limit, but this does not always mean you can withdraw the full amount in one transaction.

Withdrawing Cash Outside Canada

Your withdrawal limit is based on Canadian dollars.

When withdrawing foreign currency, the converted Canadian-dollar value of the withdrawal, along with any applicable fees, must remain within your available daily limit.

For example, if your daily withdrawal limit is $500 CAD, you will not be able to withdraw $500 USD. The amount available in U.S. dollars will depend on:

  • The exchange rate at the time of the transaction
  • Foreign currency conversion costs
  • Network or account service charges
  • Fees charged by the ATM operator
  • The amount you have already withdrawn that day

Consider withdrawing less than the maximum amount displayed to allow room for exchange-rate differences and applicable fees.

The ATM May Have Its Own Limit

Each ATM operator may set a maximum amount that can be withdrawn in a single transaction.

The amount may depend on:

  • The ATM’s available bill denominations
  • The number of bills the machine can dispense at one time
  • Limits established by the ATM owner or network

For example, even if your debit card has a daily withdrawal limit of $1,000, an ATM may only allow a smaller amount per transaction.

You may need to complete more than one withdrawal. However, each withdrawal counts toward your daily limit, and an additional fee may apply to each transaction.
